The Live Oaks Garden Club started in 1997 as an offshoot of the St. Simons Island Newcomers Group. Several members of that group wanted to stay together and at the same time learn how to successfully garden in the heat and sandy soil indigenous to the south. In addition, these members wanted to become involved in community gardening and landscaping projects. To supply funding for these community projects, the annual poinsettia sale was started in 1999. Proceeds from the sale go to the club's designated projects.

Besides working on community garden projects, we hold monthly meetings to both network and learn varied ways to deal with our individual plant challenges. Programs each month focus on topics important to club members. In the past, our programs have included: When and How to Prune Different Shrubs and Trees; Planting and Care of Camellias and Roses; Worm Farming as Plant Fertilizer; Container Gardening; Successful Vegetable Gardening; and Accent Plants for Your Garden. We also host an annual plant exchange among members. Gardening in the Golden Isles is an ongoing learning and fun experience!

Our club provides many opportunities to get to know each other on a personal level. For example, we gather for a 30 minute social before each meeting, we work together on our fundraiser, the Poinsettia Sale, and hands-on members (the "Garden Angels") help with the upkeep of our Butterfly Garden, Rose Garden, Pier Planters and the Village Pot Project. We host an annual holiday party and Spring guest party.

Some of our members have lived and gardened in the area for over 20 years. They have a wealth of information to share. We welcome new members. Please see the membership application under the "Contact Us" page.
